Synopsis
As climate change accelerates, we face unprecedented challenges, including extreme heat conditions often referred to as "global boiling." This seminar will emphasize the necessity of conducting urban microclimate studies within urban renewal efforts. Understanding local climatic conditions is vital for creating resilient and livable urban spaces.
We are honored to invite Ar. Lawrence Mak from the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) to present relevant studies associated with their projects, showcasing practical applications of these findings. Additionally, Dr. Ren Chao will share insights from her latest research on urban ventilation, focusing on strategies to improve airflow and mitigate heat effects in urban areas.

“To Design for a Sustainable City: URA’s Actions” by Ar. Lawrence MAK
The URA is tasked to improve the standard of housing and the built environment of Hong Kong through urban renewal. Inside which, sustainability is URA's corporate commitment which interweaves the various stages of urban renewal as well as being a tenet that drives our policies and operations.
The sharing will cover URA’s action on sustainability at a strategic level via ESG provisions, various corporate sustainability studies and the implementation of international standards such as the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Design Goals; as well as URA’s efforts under an integrated approach combining redevelopment, rehabilitation, preservation and revitalisation for urban regeneration, which cascades down the entire process from area-wide planning, project design to implementation.

Rapid urbanisation in China has deteriorated urban environmental conditions, exemplified by poor urban ventilation, air quality and urban visibility. In recent years, the Central Government of China and local municipalities have addressed the concerns of sustainable development, environmental protection, and ecological recovery by introducing urban climatic evaluations into town planning and design practices, particularly creating urban ventilation corridors at the city level. Dr. Ren has led a team to conduct a cross-disciplinary collaboration to link urban form and building design parameters into urban ventilation considerations.
