Synopsis
As we know, Northern Metropolis is a major new development in HK. It is rich in historical, cultural, ecological and environmental values.
The aquaculture of the commercial fishponds in Northern Metropolis represents a unique type of human-influenced wetlands in the Inner Deep Bay. Their production and ecological function require constant human intervention. A team of researchers and designers led by Joshua Bolchover, Donn Holohan, Xiaoxuan Lu and Jersey Poon from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have recently designed and built three innovative agricultural devices in San Tin. These devices not only address socio-environmental challenges faced by the fishponds but also explore untapped opportunities in this productive landscape, such as energy production, water purification, and, public education.
This guided tour of the team’s devices in this unique fishpond ecology of Hong Kong will allow participants to gain an understanding of the important mechanisms in fishpond production and ecology. It will give you an insight into the different issues as you walk through the fishponds in San Tin, a critical site for the Northern Metropolis where the San Tin Technopole and Sam Po Shue Wetland Conservation Park are located.
