Clarification of HKIA/ARB Accredited/Recognised Architectural Programmes and Academic Qualification Assessment (AQA)
Date: 24 July 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[24 July 2025]

Clarification of The Hong Kong Insitutue of Architects (HKIA)

Recognised Architectural Programmes

and  Academic Qualification Assessment (AQA)

The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) wishes to clarify a recent matter concerning the recognition of a portfolio preparation course and the Academic Qualification Assessment (AQA).

  1. HKIA Does Not Recognise or Certify Any Portfolio Preparation Courses

We would like to inform the public that currently HKIA DOES NOT recognise, accredit, or certify any portfolio preparation courses or webinars. Any courses claiming formal endorsement by HKIA that are not listed as accredited programmes are misleading and inaccurate.

For a list of HKIA/ARB accredited architectural programmes, please refer to our HKIA website: https://www.hkia.net/en/professional-assessment/eligibility.

  1. AQA is NOT a Mandatory Requirement for Graduates from UK Architectural Programmes

We would like to clarify that prior to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between HKIA and the Architects Registration Board of the United Kingdom (ARBUK) in 2024, there was a transitional arrangement recognising UK academic qualifications as meeting eligibility requirements for the HKIA/ARB Professional Assessment (for cohorts of 2020/21 、2021/22、2022/23 and 2023/2024), therefore the Academic Qualification Assessment (AQA) is NOT a mandatory requirement for graduates of UK architectural programmes.

This matter has also been reported to the Consumer Council and Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department. We encourage the public to exercise caution and to verify the credentials of courses being offered. The HKIA remains committed to maintaining high standards in architectural education and practices.
