Overview:

This HKIA sharing brings together two complementary, practice-ready perspectives on fire safety for existing buildings — an area architects increasingly encounter in A&A, MBIS/MWIS, adaptive reuse, and building-improvement commissions.

Mr. Thomas Yang Jinze will introduce how Scan-to-BIM can support fire safety inspection and documentation: capturing as-built conditions by 3D scanning and photo, locating fire service installations in a spatial model, and turning captured data into usable inspection report for design, compliance review, and coordination with FSD and other consultants.

Mr. Kalvin Ng & Mr. David Ng will introduce a smart fire alert system designed for old buildings, explaining how IoT-based detection and early warning can complement conventional FSIs, reduce installation time and spatial constraints in aged building stock, and support owners, APs, and property managers in meeting fire safety improvement requirements.

By connecting Scan-to-BIM inspection workflows with practical alert systems for existing building stock, the session shows how technology can strengthen fire safety across both new and old buildings — giving architects a clear, actionable view of how these tools support survey, design coordination, compliance, implementation, and day-to-day operation.
