Celebrating the Success of the HKIA x HKFYG Design Charrette 2026!

We are thrilled to announce the great successful completion of the 5th Design Charrette: "Vertical City: Re-Designing Hong Kong’s Skyline". Co-organized by The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), this year’s event was extra special as it marked HKIA’s landmark 70th anniversary.
Over two action-packed weekends (July 11 and July 18–19, 2026), F.2 to F.6 secondary school students immersed themselves in Hong Kong’s rich architectural history, exploring how our iconic vertical landscape evolved from the 1950s to the 1990s.
Programme Highlights

Day 1 (July 11): The journey began at LockCha in Hong Kong Park with insightful expert sharing sessions, followed by a guided architectural tour through Central. Students explored the cultural stories behind masterpieces like The Murray, the HSBC Main Building, Jardine House, and the Bank of China Tower.

Days 2–3 (July 18–19): Creative energy peaked during an intensive two-day design workshop at the HKFYG Leadership Institute in Fanling. Under the guidance of our architect mentors, students tackled complex urban challenges, wrestled with the balance between adaptive reuse and new construction, and built models showcasing their visions for a sustainable, human-centered skyline.
An event of this scale would not have been possible without the dedication of our HKIA volunteer mentors. A great thank for giving their time, sharing the expertise, and inspiring the next generation.
