Dahei New Village is in the mountainous area of Southwest China, where Gongfang (community hall) serves as an important venue for hosting various events and gatherings. Owing to structural instability caused by uneven foundation settlement, the original Gongfang became unsafe over time. In response to this challenge, the One University One Village (1U1V) team innovated local rammed earth construction technology and rebuilt a safer and more comfortable Gongfang for the villagers. The project emphasizes the use of local resources and comprehensive training programs for local people. The villagers’ love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs are fully considered and valued in this process. This “scientific method, adaptive technology” strategy and “local material, local people, and local labor” approach is crucial for enhancing environmental, social, and economic sustainability of rural areas.
