The Tai Po Kau Tide Gauge Station adopts the metaphor of an iceberg to highlight the urgency of climate change. To replace the former box-shape station situated at the end of Tai Po Kau Railway Pier, the new design drew inspiration from its coastal setting, surrounded by Pat Sin Leng and Ma On Shan ranges. The sculptural form resembles a glacier tip rising from the sea, symbolizing melting ice and rising tides due to global warming. A fair-faced concrete core anchors the structure, while a cladding system of perforated aluminum and mirrored stainless steel mimics ice crystallization and interacts with sunlight to animate the façade. An exposed stilling well, marks historical storm surges, alerting public about the past impacts. This station serves as a physical reminder of the threat of global warming, making the station both a scientific facility and a climate awareness landmark.
