The International Union of Architects (UIA) is once more present at the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP) on Climate Change, which opened in Sharm-El-Sheik, Egypt, on 6 November 2022.

Ishtiaque Zahir Titas, Vice-President of the UIA for Region IV, accompanied by the Region V Vice-President Tokunbo Omisore and Iman Gawad, Co-Director of the UIA Sustainable Development Goals Commission, will lead the delegation of architects which will express the profession’s commitment to sustainable development in respect for the environment and the planet.

As part of the 28th UIA World Congress of Architects taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 2 to 6 July 2023, the organisers are offering 100 fellowships for students and 100 fellowships for architects attending the Congress from lower and lower-middle income countries as listed by the World Bank. The deadline to apply for a fellowship is 15 January 2023.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED: LIANG SICHENG PRIZE 2020 & 2022

The UIA Chinese Member Section, the Architectural Society of China (ASC), have announced the winners of the 10th and 11th editions of the biennial Liang Sicheng Prize. The jury selected Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and Chinese architect Li Xinggang as winners of the 10th Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize. Chinese architects Zhang Li and Hu Yue won the 2022 (11th) edition of the Prize,  which recognises architects who have dedicated their professional career to the preservation of architectural heritage and the development of technological and socially responsible innovations in the field of architecture.

BANGLADESH: SYMPOSIUM 

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the Institute of Architects of Bangladesh (IAB) hosted a symposium on 22 October 2022 on “Architecture for Health”, followed by a round table with Marina TabassumMahmudul Anwar Riyaad and M. Kishwar Imdad moderated by UIA Region IV Vice President Ishtiaque Zahir Titas. After the introductions from IAB President Mubasshar Hussain and UIA President José Luis Cortés, keynote speakers Natalie Mossin, Vice President of UIA Région I and architect Jakob Knudsen, addressed post-pandemic architectural solutions for well-being in the built environment. During the event, IAB hosted the 7th UIA Bureau meeting.

SOUTH KOREA: CONVENTION & EXHIBITION

The Korean Institute of Architects (KIA) held its 2022 Convention & Exhibition in Daegu on 8-13 November with the theme MISSING LINK; lost architecture(s). UIA President José Luis Cortés and Region IV Vice President Ishtiaque Zahir Titas attended the event.  The UIA President also met with the Mayor of Seoul Oh Se-hoon during a visit to Seoul City Hall on 9 November. They agreed to work closely on events next year, such as the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism and the 2023 UIA World Congress of Architects in Copenhagen

CANADA: UIA VICE PRESIDENT HONOURED 

UIA Region III Vice President Sam Oboh was honoured on 29 October by Afroglobal Television when he was selected to feature among Canada's 100 Influential Black Canadians. Principal at Ensight+, a design firm in Canada and former President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), his work addresses the health, equity, and climate change challenges of our time.

UGANDA: GENERAL MEETING

The Uganda Society of Architects (USA) is holding its 2022 Annual General Meeting on 2 December 2022 at the Golf Course Hotel in Kampala, Uganda.  The event follows the two-day 1st Annual Built Environment Conference 2022 which took place in Kampala from 14 to 15 November on the theme of Net Zero. USA President Ssinabulya Emmanuel was among the speakers.

SPAIN: NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE PRIZE

The Spanish Ministry of Transportation, Mobility and Urban Agenda has awarded architect Emilio Tuñón the 2022 National Architecture Prize in recognition of his work and his professional career. The jury praised the “quality and excellence of his built work, recognised internationally and which has had deep social impact.”

PAKISTAN: EXHIBITION & FORUM

The Institute of Architects of Pakistan (IAP) organised an exhibition and forum 3 to 6 November dedicated to construction on the theme “Cities of Today.” Featuring global professionals, the event addressed recent work, trends and new orientations for contemporary architecture. UIA President José Luis Cortés participated in the event.

CYPRUS: NEW PRESIDENT

Alkis Dikaios is the new president of the Cyprus Architects Association for a term of two years. He holds degrees in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and London's Architectural Association and the Design Research Laboratory (DRL). An associate architect at Athos Dikaios + Associates since 2003, he is also a professor of architecture at the University of Cyprus. He succeeds Christos Christodoulou in the position.

COSTA RICA: NEW PRESIDENT

Pablo A. Mora Fallas is the new president of the Colegio de Arquitectos e Ingenieros de Costa Rica (CACR) for a one year term. He holds a Masters in tropical architecture bioclimatism and urban planning from the University of Costa Rica. Founder of G+P Ecodiseños, he has long been active in the Costa Rican Section, as Vice President and as Climate Change Commission Coordinator. He succeeds Rashid Sauma in the position.

In alignment with the revisions to the European Union’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) is calling for an ambitious revision of this directive aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, thus establishing the European Union on the path to carbon neutrality by 2050 based on the energy performance of buildings. “We have a unique opportunity to make the  Energy Performance of Buildings Directive a piece of legislation that supports architectural quality and accountability of the sector, while at the same time includes the necessary mechanisms for consideration of whole life-cycle carbon emissions” stated ACE President Ruth Schagemann.

UIA YEAR OF DESIGN FOR HEALTH: WEBINAR 

On 21 November 2022 at 14:00, Paris time, the UIA Public Health Group will host a webinar entitled, “Design For Health and Emerging Technologies”. Moderated by Kevin Bingham, the webinar will bring together global experts to emphasise the importance of evidence-based research and design promoting health in the planning and design of any project.

French architect Eric Wirth passed away on 12 November 2022.  He completed his studies in architecture at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Industries de Strasbourg (ENSAIS) in 1983, and founded his firm in Bordeaux in 1986. Active and committed member of the UIA Council since his election in 2021, he invested himself through his work on the Task Force in the task of restructuring the governance of the UIA. We will remember his integrity, his kindness and his profound humanity. The UIA sends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at the Conseil national de l’ordre des architectes de France.
