Heritage conservation plays a vital role in preserving our cultural identity and architectural legacy. However, in recent times, there has been a tendency to overlook the significance of architectural design in the conservation process. This seminar aims to challenge this perception and shed light on the crucial role that architects play in leading heritage adaptive design.

The elite speaker, Ar Leung is a practicing architect who has extensive experience in the conservation and restoration of historic buildings. His adaptive reuse design of Tong Lau in Mallory Street, Wan Chai attained the HKIA Medal of the Year in 2014. His recent research focuses on Chinese mix West architectures in the urban context, and his paper titled "Accidental Marriage - Chinese Roofs of Early Colonial Architectures of Hong Kong" received the Best Paper Award at the 2017 International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress.

The seminar aims at demystifying common jargon associated with heritage conservation, such as Cultural Significances and Character Defining Elements (CDEs) and to navigate in labyrinths like Conservation Management Plans (CMP) as well as Heritage Impact Assessments (HIA). By doing so, he hopes to equip architects with the necessary knowledge and tools to drive the heritage study and conservation submission process effectively, ensuring that design is supported rather than sabotaged. Moreover, Ar Leung will challenge the prevailing "No-Touch" preconceptions and encourage participants to explore innovative interventions that can enhance the appreciation of our heritage. By embracing architectural design as a driving force in heritage conservation, we can ensure the preservation of our cultural heritage for future generations.
