學會成立的首要目的,是為了
- 推廣建築學的一般發展並促進及幫助各界人士獲取與建築學有關的各類藝術及科技知識。
- 提高香港建築學及學會會員所提供的專業建築服務的水平。
在香港,建築師的註冊由建築師註冊管理局按香港建築師註冊條例監管。
有志成為香港註冊建築師的建築學畢業生,在完成必要的實習工作後,可參加學會和建築師註冊管理局每年定期共同安排的專業測評。通過測評的人士可成為香港建築師學會會員,而根據香港建築師註冊條例,此學會會員資格亦符合香港註冊建築師的註冊資格要求。
至於外地註冊的建築師如欲在香港註冊,在累積一定的香港工作經驗後,可參加學會和建築師註冊管理局特別安排的非本地建築專才計劃並通過面試後,成為學會會員及取得香港註冊建築師的註冊資格。
本學會和建築師註冊管理局緊密合作,聯合認証由本地大學、大專院校所舉辦的建築學課程,並就建築專業資格和實習有關事宜提供意見及建議。
經本學會及建築師註冊管理局認證的建築學專業學位,除在本港被認可外,更透過與內地及包括澳大利亞及紐西蘭等海外國家當地之建築學專業學位評估機構分別簽訂的專業評估互認協議,為當地所認可。
運用會員集體的專業知識,學會積極向政府和建造業提供專業意見。目前,香港建築師學會在多個官方及非官方機構及組織的諮詢顧問委員會內均有代表參與。此外學會亦不時就社會及業界關心的議題進行研究,從專業角度提供意見及建議。
學會積極參與國際建築師協會 (UIA)、英聯邦建築師協會(CAA)、亞洲建築師協會(ARCASIA)及亞洲太平洋經濟合作會議(APEC)等國際専業組織的活動,以促進交流有關建築學各方面及建築専業有關連的事宜的資訊和觀念。

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED being met together on the third day of September in the year one thousand nine hundred and fifty-six and being desirous of forming a Society in the Colony of Hong Kong for the general advancement of Civil Architecture and for promoting and facilitating the acquirement of the knowledge of the various Arts and Sciences connected therewith DO HEREBY BAND OURSELVES TOGETHER IN A SOCIETY TO BE KNOWN AS THE HONG KONG SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTS and do undertake as Foundation Members to subscribe to the funds and be bound by the Rules of the Society AND DO FURTHER DECLARE AND AGREE AS FOLLOWS:
1 that the Society shall consist of Members,Honorary Members, Associates, Graduates and Students;
2 that the Society shall elect and be governed by a Council consisting of a President, two Vice-Presidents, and such other Officers and Members of Council as it may decide;
3 that the Society shall make such Rules for its own good governance and the conduct of its members as it may from time to time think fit;
4 that the Society shall have power in its corporate name to acquire, hold and dispose of property and funds and shall to this end comply with Ordinances of the Government of Hong Kong;
5 that the Society shall invite and have as its Patron a person of eminence in colony.

Membership of the Institute comprises of 2 main categories by individual or by architectural practice.
Honorary Fellows shall be such persons of eminence as the Institute may wish to honour and whose membership would further the objects of the Institute
Members shall be qualified architects, duly nominated and elected by the Council of the Institute, who
a. are members of any other architects’ association, institution or register recognized by the Council for the purpose of admission, or
b. hold a degree or a diploma in architecture recognized by the Council, have two years post - graduate architectural experience or its equivalent as defined by the Council from time to time and who have passed the HKIA/ARB Professional Assessment or its approved equivalent.
Members who have had a minimum of 15 years standing in the Institute and in practice for 15 years (relevant experience in the academic or the public sectors being recognized) or have made a significant contribution to the work of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects or to the field of architecture shall be elected as Fellows subject to the approval of the Council.
Associates shall be persons who have completed a course of study in architecture and
a. a professional diploma / degree in Architecture obtained on completion of a five-year or equivalent, full-time course of study, which is recognized by a national accrediting body in the country in which the degree is conferred.
b.1. being a current full member of an established architectural institution which has a status equivalent to that of HKIA in its country of origin at the time of application.
b.2. possessing professional experience in architecture or in a related field for a minimum of 5 years full time obtained after the acquisition of a professional diploma degree in Architecture as required in (a) above.
b.3. are working as a full-time teaching staff of the course(s) of study in architecture in a University or School recognized by the Council with certification of the Head of the Department at the time of application.
Associates may use the statement ‘Associate of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects’ or the title ‘Associate H.K.I.A.’ after their names.
Affiliates shall be persons or categories of persons considered by the Council to have a connection with the architectural profession and who are suitable to be admitted as Affiliates of the Institute.
Affiliates may use the statement ‘Affiliate of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects’ or ‘Affiliate HKIA’ after their names.
Graduate Members shall be persons who
a. possess a degree or diploma in the field of architectural studies from a University or School recognised by the Council, or
b. have passed any professional examination in architecture recognised by the Council.
Student Members shall be persons who are enrolled in courses of study in architecture in a University or School recognized by the Council.
Retired Members shall be any Member, Associate or Graduate Member who has retired from practice and ceased to draw remuneration from architectural work, subject always to the approval of the Council.
Any Member, Associate or Graduate Member who is not ordinarily resident in Hong Kong may apply for a change of membership status to Non-Resident Member, subject always to the approval of the Council.
Corporate Members shall be corporations carrying on an architectural practice in Hong Kong that has –
1. at least one of the directors of the corporation being a Foundation Member, a Member, or a Fellow of the Institute;
2.a. at least 30% of the directors of the corporation being Foundation Members, Members, and/or Fellows of the Institute;
2.b. at least 30% of the voting rights of the corporation being held by Foundation Members, Members, and/or Fellows of the Institute;

作為專業建築師,除了履行法定的責任外,學會會員還要遵守一套專業操守守則。制定這守則的目的是為了確保學會會員的專業操守,行事持正,維持建築師專業的地位以及遏止業內的不名譽行為。
會員一經確認違反守則或行為不符專業操守,可遭受譴責、暫時吊銷甚至開除會籍。這樣方可確保香港建築師學會的會員向公眾提供高質的專業服務水平。
