Project Manager (Architect) FAQ

 

Q: Why is HKIA establishing the PM(A) title?

A: The construction industry is seeing increasing demand for qualified project management professionals, especially with the upcoming system of professional liability. The PM(A) recognises architects specialising in project management, ensuring high standards in project coordination and execution.

 

Q: What is the purpose of establishing the PM(A) title?

A: The PM(A) title aims to recognise HKIA members who specialise in project management, addressing the growing demand for qualified professionals in the building and construction sectors.

 

Q: How does the PM(A) benefit the construction industry?

A: Architects in project management roles bring unique skills such as design understanding, problem-solving skills, effective communication, and regulatory compliance, improving coordination, efficiency, and quality in building projects.

 

Q: Who is eligible to apply for the PM(A) status?

A:  Requirements are:

  1. Membership:
  • A minimum of continuous 7 years of full membership with HKIA, OR  
  • A minimum of continuous 7 years of membership with ARBHK as a Registered Architect 

AND 

 

  1. Experience:
  • At least 7 years of experience in project management (experience from both local and overseas projects is accepted): 
    • Experience prior to acquiring HKIA full membership may count, but at least  5 years must be post-membership.
    • Experience can be as a project manager for a developer/client or as a manager in a consultancy firm.
    • ‘Full project cycle’ experience is required, which can be accumulated from various projects at different stages as defined under the HKIA consultancy agreement.

 

 

Q:  Does overseas project management experience count?

A:  Experience can be from both local and overseas projects. It should include involvement in the full project cycle, either as a project manager for a developer/client or as a manager in a consultancy firm.

 

Q: Can experience before HKIA membership be considered?

A: Yes, but at least 5 years must be post-membership

 

Q:  Is there an assessment process for applicants?

A:   Yes, applicants must fill in the application form demonstrating their qualifications. An interview may be required if there are doubts about the submitted materials.

 

Q: What is the application fee for the PM(A) status?

A: The application fee is a one-off payment of HKD 1,000.

 

Q: How will the PM(A) status be renewed?

A: The PM(A) status will be renewed annually upon the renewal of HKIA membership.

 

Q: What benefits do PM(A) holders receive?

A: Successful applicants will receive confirmation of their status and will be listed on the HKIA website.

 

Q: What if my application is rejected?

A: Candidates can apply for a review of their result within 14 days of the announcement, with a fee of HKD 300. Appeals are limited to material administrative errors in the assessment process.

 

Q: Will there be ongoing professional development for PM(A) holders?

A: PM(A) holders are highly recommended to keep their professionalism updated such as attending related seminar. The HKIA CPDO will organise Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events themed at project management to support the professional growth of members.
