GUANGDONG MUSEUM

Guangdong Museum is one of the four cultural landmarks for Zhujiang New Town of Guangzhou. Conceived as an Objet d'Art in a monumental scale, it is an allegory to the impeccably and intricately sculpted antique Chinese artifacts of a lacquer box, which collects and reflects treasures of the times. The museum is designed to house objects of treasure, and is also a treasured object of fascination. It is an identifiable cultural icon, giving visitors a memorable experience on the traditional wisdoms as well as the appreciation of the cultural identity of the city.

Tamar.jpg

HKSAR GOVERNMENT HEADQUARTERS

The project is an intricately composed Government Complex, integrating three principal facilities: the CGC High and Low Block, the Legco Complex and the landscaped civic park. The design concept of the Tamar Development embodies four themes:

Openness - ”Door is always open”

Enjoyment - “Land is always green”

Sustainability - “Sky will be blue”

Communication - “People will be connected”

To enhance the connectivity from Admiralty to Waterfront Promenade, the Legco Complex and the CGC low block buildings are located on each side of the site, aligning respectively with the CGC east and west wings, flanking the central park area and angling towards the Waterfront to provide a gesture of unity for the whole development.

Yunnan-Provincial-Museum.jpg

YUNNAN MUSEUM

Yunnan Province is home to more than half of the nations ethnic minorities. The diverse cultures are unified by its unique landscape and accentuated by the rich colour of different people. The generative concept of this museum is derived from the potent imagery of Yunnan's famed local 'stone forests', the dramatic geological landscape sculpted by nature over millions of years. It is the geography of a raw, powerful beauty, combined with the idea of stacked boxed holding diverse and fragile historical treasures that give the architecture its defining metaphor as an assembled container of multi-cultural artifacts. The museum makes use of the excellent climatic conditions of the high-plateau. Photo-voltaic, open courtyards, natural ventilation and local vegetation are all parts of its green initiatives.

W GUANGZHOU HOTEL AND RESIDENCES

The W Guangzhou Hotel & Residences complex is located along the main axis of the new CBD of Guangzhou. To the west of the complex locates the districts main boulevard - Xiancun Road; and on the other side lies the residential building which is part and parcel of the same urban block. With a typical city block with an inner landscaped courtyard, the W Guangzhou Hotel & Residences provides the interface between the tranquil courtyard and the main boulevard.

Hong-Kong-Station.jpg

IFC, HONG KONG STATION DEVELOPMENT

Situated on the reclamation land in the Central Business District on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong Station is the terminus of both the Airport Express and the Tung Chung Line and the Airport Railway's gateway to the heart of the city. The entire International Finance Centre comprises hotels, extensive retail facilities and office towers, one of them being the landmark 88-storey building. The station is also an important part of Central's comprehensive

transport interchange. It connects with new and existing bus termini, the new ferry pier on the edge of the reclamation, and ground vehicular traffic, and connection to the elevated pedestrian walkways network in Central. Central to design concept of the station is the creation of transparent, fluid spaces that employ optimum natural illumination and clear spatial configuration to guide the movement of commuters. This concept was exemplified in the In-town Check-in Hall, where the dramatic four-storey high space is lit by a full-height glazed wall with skylights and clerestories. A series of large voids are immediately sited adjacent the glazed wall which allow natural light to penetrate the basement concourse. The IFC development is a complex matrix

of transport, public and commercial use, and in itself a mini-city within the city.

Baoan-Cultural-Complex.jpg

BAOAN CULTURAL COMPLEX - PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, SHENZHEN

An international competition winning scheme back in 2007, the Baoan Cultural Complex is composed of three prominent landmarks - a library, a youth palace and a performing arts centrewhich resonate one another on the recently developed east coast of Shenzhen.

The three buildings sit along a central axis that extends from the citys hinterland into the South China Sea. With a series of public plazas intertwined in between, together they form a unified whole on the once barren site. Each block being a simple, rectangular mass to start with, the buildings are morphed to reflect their true functions. The librarys facade subtly tilts upward and outward, the youth palaces façade whirls around a central courtyard opening up to the city and the performing arts centres on the other hand flutters like stage curtains against the gentle breeze from the shore.

Architecturally, the buildings facades take cues from wood and ivory carving techniques that are indigenous to Southern China: The delicately perforated skins provide not only efficient shading for the interiors, but also rich, dramatic visual effects to the exteriors. The playful and gradated opacity keeps the interiors bright and comfortable. While formally pioneering, the design is intended to reflect qualities and subtleties rooted from a long oriental tradition.

CUHKSZ.JPG

COMPREHENSIVE MASTER PLAN OF THE CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG (SHENZHEN) AND PHASE 1 DEVELOPMENT

The design intends to create a sustainable learning environment for 7000 students. By zoning the campus as 'Academic Clusters', 'Campus Green' and 'Natural Terrain', communities are formed to promote interactions between research, learning, working and living while the existing ridgelines and the natural environment are preserved. The 'Natural Terrain' preserves the hilly nature of the site. College buildings and student amenities are positioned to preserve the vista to the hills. 'Campus Green' draws the valleys into the campus. It allows student activities to be extended to it from the surrounding academic facilities. The 'Academic Clusters' is composed of teaching facilities, laboratories and lecture theatres. They are grouped to encourage multiple uses and flexibility. The campus suggests interconnectivity, convenience of

circulations, multiple points of contact, array of activities with diverse choices, encouraging multi-disciplinary cross-overs and innovative creativities.

iSQUARE.JPG

iSQUARE

The redevelopment of the former Hyatt Hotel site in Kowloon displaces the original hotel function but expands the retail element, which now takes centre stage and extends across the full height vertically with a series of sky-atria. The distinctive new composition of the building formulates a new and charismatic skyline at the heart of the shopping area, drawing in the general public and creating a destination for a new retail experience. At night, the specially designed facade lighting gives the new building an enigmatic glow that distinguishes itself from Nathan Roads neon light extravaganza. By expanding the public's participation in the new architecture, where the public domain permeates to the highest floors, the erstwhile landmark site now assumes an enhanced civic significance, where fragments of the past will be celebrated in multi-dimensions.

Hotel-ICON.JPG

TEACHING HOTEL COMPLEX, THE HONG KONG POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY - HOTEL ICON

The new Teaching Hotel for HK PolyU (Hotel ICON) retains the original staff residential function, but transforms it into an overall composition that now comprises a 262-room hotel as well as a teaching complex. The site is opened up horizontally both visually and spatially with glass atria at various levels allowing visual permeability connecting either sides of the site.

Chu-Hai-College.jpg

NEW CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT OF CHU HAI COLLEGE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

The design is inspired by the compact urban situation of our own city and intends to become a miniature high density city in itself: Multiple mini-blocks consisting of different programs are stacked vertically on top of each other over a podium of communal activities. A folded vertical Student Boulevard rises to form a linear event space that connects all levels in a meandering movement. Together with bridges of library and student unions, they form a 3-dimensional street network in the sky that weaves and binds the different blocks into a complex connected whole. The Student Boulevard also embraces a series of sky gardens and podium decks on various levels, forming lawn amphitheatre, student plaza, mini cafe, private gardens, etc., all with magnificent sea views and full of lives.
