Conference Tower @ HKUST

anticipated completion date: end of 2014
The Site
The site is situated beautifully at the far end of the Main Campus of the University, facing the seashore without any visual obstruction.

The site is a 1,680sq.m linear site with North-South Orientation, planning with 8 storey of total GFA 7,200 sq.m. The Site
The site is situated beautifully at the far end of the Main Campus of the University, facing the seashore without any visual obstruction.
The Design Synopsis
The linear site originally fosters a linear narrow architectural block with a juxtaposition gesture. However, the 180 degree sea view fosters a stronger Superimposition setting by opening up the architectural massing to create a central void for both airiness and openness as well as creating a strong visual linkage around the interior of the Tower.

The architectural superimposition is conceived as an Herbal Chest, whilst the Guest Rooms are conceived as Colorful Cubes randomly displayed around the major elevation facing north
The Accommodation
The entire Conference Tower aims to create a relaxing, pleasant but contemporary hospitality ambience to welcome International Scholars and Families to stay.

The accommodation includes 130 Guest Rooms for Twin-share, Double Bed, Family Suites and Executive Suites. In order to facilitate the Academic Exchange and its supporting facilities, Conference Room and Seminar Room are flexibly provided at the Entrance Level. Restaurant and Cafeteria are also equipped at the same level along with Contemporary Reception and Lounge.

New Headquarter of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals @ Tsing Yi

Situated in the Southern Part of Tsing Yi, the new premises of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is an attempt to Re-Organize the Basic Components of the Society to provide better hospitality communications, caring, and services to the general public.
The ?CATWALK? + ?DOGWALK? in the Air
In order to facilitate a better communication and circulation for both Animals and Human, the ?Grand Ramp? is exaggerated along the peripheral of the front elevation, thus the expressive ramp is the major circulation to the premises which also performs as a ?Social-Gathering Ramp? for visitors, animals and medical staff to meet up and to share ideas on animals.
The new premises in Tsing Yi totally occupy an area of 77149.2 s. q. ft, composed of functions like Main Reception Centre, Veterinary, Shop/ Storage/ Pharmacy, Adoption Unit, Cat Colony Care Unit, Meeting / Interview Room, Adoption Unit, Grooming and Laundry at Ground Floor to provide the closest proximity and easiest arrival for visitors.

HKFW T.S. Kwok Service Centre @ Lockhart Road, Wanchai

New Design for Hong Kong Federation of Women
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeF0TIgXSOI
In a high density city like Hong Kong, acquiring space for different purposes often mean a high cost. This probably especially presents greater difficulty to NGOs and charitable groups operating on subsidies or donations.
Leftover spaces under flyovers are one of the viable options for extra spaces. Often deemed inhospitable, the Canal Road flyover in Wanchai and Causeway Bay is one exception that carves out architectural spaces for different purposes, one of them being the Headquarters of the Hong Kong Federation of Women.
The new Hong Kong Federation of Women T.S. Kwok Service Centre spans approximately 80m occupying 9,500sq.ft. across one single floor. Designed by BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors, the new architecture under the bridge harbours a variety of facilities. Apart from administrative areas, multi-function room, lecture hall, display gallery are some new additions to the Headquarter, functions that open up possibilities for the Federation to organize and host more activities for its members and organizations.
To realize the design objectives for the Centre, dedicated features are incorporated into the architecture to improve or overcome the negative environmental aspects presented by site conditions, namely the undesirable air quality, lighting and ventilation of the building.

Skynet @ Logo Square + Courtyard Caf? The Polytechnic University of Hong Kong

New Skynet design for HK PolyU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNmf07EWzow
Significance of the Siting
Located at the Heart of the PolyU campus, the Logo Square performs as the central point of numerous campus activities for students and teaching staff.
Synopsis
The project engages BARRIEHO Architecture into a second dialogue with the works of Zaha Hadid Architects, in this case the Innovation Tower.
The design philosophy core to the whole PolyU campus has been quite consistently of red brick modules. While ZHA?s Innovation Tower ?blends in? with the existing campus ?by contrast? with its fluid form, our Skynet, closest at 50m from the Tower, deliberately takes an orthogonal and angular form in a variety of sizes to contrast with their provocative blend-in strategy.
Skynet takes on 2 metaphors. The form of the Skynet takes the metaphor of an organic tree, with the structural supports branching out to support the glass canopy in an organic geometric order. Also because of this environmental suggestion, the glass canopy is conceived as the sky. Glass of different hues of blue is used, creating a Skynet that is almost invisible.

Adaptive Reuse Architecture in Hyper Density City -
Transformation of an Abandoned Primary School into The Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) @ Siu Sai Wan

In a Hyper Density City like Hong Kong, there are no more lands to build. Therefore the strategy of Re-Cycling the existing abandoned architecture by Re-introducing new functions and elements to Re-Create the Adaptive Re-Use is a MUST, though the topic ?Adaptive Reuse? in architecture is a premature but a hot chapter.
Adaptive Reuse Architectural Design is paradoxical, is an attempt to provide a new life to an existing architecture by reintroducing new functions and new elements to transform a "Re-birth" to the architecture in a Hyper-Density City. The project is basically a Transformation of an existing Abandoned School into the Headquarter of 2 Government Offices ? An Adaptive Reuse of Architecture in Hyper-Density City like Hong Kong.
The Adaptive Reuse Architectural Design actually is far more complicated than the construction of a new building, which requires intensive considerations on Structural Alterations, Electrical & Mechanical Alterations, Architectural Re-Layouts, New Functions and Internal Circulations, External Finishes and External Signage to give the "Re-birth".
In addition, the entire Adaptive Re-use and its alterations in Structure, Electrical & Mechanical, Architectural Dimensions and Ergonomics, New Functions & Circulation, as well as Interior Detailing & Lighting Designs are specifically designed for Functionality & Practicality in Human Body.
Adaptive Re-Use in Architecture is a vague, premature topic in Hyper-Density City like Hong Kong, but is a kind of Sustainability and Adaptability in City Planning, thus is a hot topic of future vision of Architectural Development in populated Asian country.

The intensive alteration includes new functions:-
- Reception
- Conference Rooms
- Lecture Halls/ Multi-Function Rooms
- Staffs Rooms/ In-charge Rooms
- Green Zone
- Modified Elevator, increase the Entrances & Barrier-Free Access
