Synopsis
The central part of Kowloon, with the flat and fertile plain around Kowloon City, had a long history of settlement. Villages like Nga Tsin Wai, Po Kong and Ma Tau Wai dated back to the Sung Dynasty. The recent archaeological excavation around Sung Wong Toi Station only scratched the surface of these old settlements. Eastern Kowloon, on the other hand, had no such a profound history.
From the 18th century onwards, a string of Hakka settlements gradually emerged along the shores of eastern Kowloon. The inhabitants there exploited the rich granite formations in the area. However, these quarries saw a decline by the early 20th century. Illustrated with historical photographs, drawings and maps, the speaker will talk about the colourful but relatively unknown history of these villages and settlements.
