HKIA Gold Medal 2020 - Results

The Institute takes great honour and pleasure to announce that the HKIA Gold Medal 2020 Award recipient is Ar James Hajime Kinoshita!
The Gold Medal Award Ceremony will take place at the coming HKIA Annual General Meeting scheduled on 10 Dec 2020, 7.00pm.

Below is Jury statement from a panel of 7 Jurors:
Ar James Hajime Kinoshita has demonstrated excellency of architecture in Hong Kong. From 1960s to 1980s, as the Partner of Palmer & Turner, he designed a series of pioneering projects for different building types including office tower, campus, hotel, and public housing. These projects demonstrated innovative integration of architecture with complex functions and structural systems in the high-density Hong Kong urban conditions, including Hilton Hotel, Connaught Centre (Jardine House now), The Landmark, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Phase 1, as well as the HKIA Annual Awards Silver Medal-winning projects AIA Building and Siu Wo Court. Simple, elegant and unique, these legendary designs skillfully brought together aesthetics with functionality and construction, setting out high design standards of office buildings, campus, and housing for the profession to follow in the next decades. The common area of Siu Wo Court was lively designed to facilitate interactive spaces, accommodating sustained communal activities for residents over years. With timeless masterpiece projects for Hong Kong, Mr. Kinoshita has been a role model of practitioner promoting architectural excellence, advancing quality of architectural design and the built environment.

Mr. Kinoshita also treasures the young generations and has been committed in supporting architectural education. Not only frequently engaged with academic programs of architectural schools in Hong Kong in the 1980s, he has also continuously invested in the students for the profession by establishing the J.H. Kinoshita Prize for Department of Architecture of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and sponsoring the annual Kinoshita Lecture in Architecture of the School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), at which prominent international architects are invited for sharing inspirations with local architectural students and professions. Mr. Kinoshita’s dedication to promote architectural excellence and his devotion to plant seed nurturing young architects are well-known to HKIA members, the professions and the public.
