Synopsis

In the past 30 years, bamboo has gradually developed into a contemporary construction material, which is now widely used in nearly 60 countries around the world. With the efforts of global architects and engineers, modern architectural design theory and construction technologies have been applied on natural bamboo that helps to open a door for people: in Latin America and Asian countries, those modern round bamboo structures full of regional style are elegant and unique, and have become beautiful sceneries in the urban and rural areas; In earthquake prone regions, bamboo with good seismic performance provides durable and safe houses for local people; In developing countries, bamboo construction has become a solution to provide decent housing for millions of low-income families and a new means of livelihood for young people; New engineered bamboo is favored by the modern industry sector because of its high potential to be processed into a large-scale. Engineered bamboo is not only used as the indoor and outdoor decorative materials for many large public buildings, but also its prospects as a structural material have attracted much attention with the promotion of international / national standardization of bamboo structures. Many countries have begun to formulate corresponding regulations and incentives to encourage people to re-recognize bamboo. Bamboo is no longer the traditional “poor man’s timber”, but a nature-based solution that can better help alleviate the global housing shortage, mitigate climate change and promote livelihood development. The development of bamboo as a contemporary construction material has just begun. What is the greater application scenario of bamboo in the future? What are the main challenges of the global bamboo construction sector? What can global architects and engineers use bamboo to do? Welcome to join the discussion.

Mrs. K. W. LIU
Coordinator of Global Bamboo Construction Programme at the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR)

Mrs. K. W. Liu is Coordinator of Global Bamboo Construction Programme at the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR). She graduated from Beijing Jiaotong University with master degree in Structural Engineering and is now a Ph.D candidate of School of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University. Since 2008, she has been working on promoting bamboo construction around the world. She managed more than 20 international bamboo construction projects and participated the establishment of INBAR Bamboo Construction Task Force. As the Convener of Working Group 12 on Structural Use of Bamboo within the Timber Structures Technical Committee of International Organization for Standardization (ISO TC165 WG12), she is working on the development and revision of international standards of structural uses of bamboo with global experts. Her academic achievements include: 7 participated international standards, 6 Chinese technical standards, more than 30 academic papers, editor-in-chief of two English Academic Proceedings, the book Contemporary Bamboo Architecture in China in both Chinese and English as the first author, and the Chinese-language version of the English book Sustainable Building in Practice: What the Users Think as the first translator. Mrs. Liu is one of the experts in three committees “Timber and Composite Structures Committee” of China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization, “Timber and Bamboo Structures Committee” and “Sustainable Civil Engineering Committee” organized by Chinese Society for Urban Studies in China.

Kewei is also the first author of the newly published book Contemporary Bamboo Architecture in China, which introduces the development of bamboo architecture in China with more than 70 typical cases studies.
