“Lift Up Kowloon East”- Winners of City Dress up Design Competition take the high road to art at the Promenade in New Year
Local

Happy Year of the Rabbit! Jumping into the new year, the Kwun Tong Promenade has been dressed-up and transformed into a district full of artistic creativity. Featured in the Secretary for Development’s blog on the first day of the new year, the award-winning entry "Lift Up Kowloon East" has injected artistic elements and district characteristics into the public space under the Kwun Tong Bypass and brought new impetus to community development.

The creative team, consisting of young Architect Derrick Leong and Designer Annie Long, has conducted research on the history of the district and identified the key characters from different periods and industries in Kowloon East. Starting from sketches on paper, the outcome is the 30 sets of giant murals along the Kwun Tong Promenade. Playing with the proportion of space in context to the human body, each of the 10-meter-tall columns features one particular character, with the entire series of murals depicting their lives and contribution to the development of Hong Kong. Apart from the murals, the team has also experimented with an interactive method of showcasing the characters, and developed photo filter in QR code for each column that turns the audience into the characters themselves.

The City Dress-up Design Competition was co-organised by the Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government, HKIA, HKIP and HKIUD. It was supported by HKILA and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
