Splash zone
It’s hard for us to contact with inhabitants underneath the water through the reflection in between. Without this connection and sympathy, massacres happen every day under the sea. Aquariums act like collections of wonders, and cages to fulfill desire. We don’t care because we can’t see. However, at the rocky intertidal zone, tide pools separate and adjust the original sea scale, blur the edge between these two worlds, and much easier to look through. This inspires me to reconnect human and the sea with some blurred spaces and edges.
The bay of Yehliu is used to be an intertidal zone but now gnawed by concrete. The original landscape is destroyed, but I view the catastrophe as an opportunity. By stimulating the erosion which creates the natural seashore, I try to rehabilitate the vague zone between land and sea. An unnatural nature, there’s more potentiality to see further and deeper with human intervention. The splash zone we met the sea first time, once again, become a starting point of an exploration.
The aquarium is alternated between structures and the sea, so the position of water and land is blurry. It’s an enormous tide pool keeping larger fish from deeper sea. The sound of wave echoes around, and sometimes you get wet from a sudden splash. Fish tanks and the real sea are also arranged alternately to blur the feeling of capturing. This aquarium is a way to meet another world, not a symbol of conquering.
In the middle, there’s a water courtyard directly connect to the sea. Wild lives can easily pass by, perch, or stay. Here is going to be a coral farm by taking advantage of coral’s fragmentation or asexual reproduction. This semi-wild area provides stable light and extra food supply, and those complex mutual reactions between lives still go on. Gradually, the Yehliu bay will be heal as the ecosystem being rebuilt. Because of the arrangement of the structure, every gap in between can be a sanctuary, easily being insulated from the outbreak of pollution. This aquarium can be the ark of the bay.
I ponder the blurry relationship between human and sea. There’s no definite edge between us, but a slight connection at the Splash Zone.

SPEED, DENSITY, DIVERSITY AND RESOURCE CONSUMPTION

LEONG On U, Derrick
Cities are always in pursuit of greater speed, density and diversity. However, the future we are facing is not about scale of building we can see – it is about the resource which we are consuming and soon to be fully consumed. Production is the real future, in order to support greater speed, density and diversity of cities. Situated in an experimental district, Qianhai of Shenzhen in the PRC, the project adopts the challenging demands for hydraulic engineering due to increasing water level as well as food production by means of water. The project is a representation of the appreciation to the functionalities of water.
Original designed by an institution in PRC, the pump station in Qianhai locates at the upper part of the water corridor for the district. Three water sources pass through the pump station, and pumped to the sewage treatment facility or directly to the corridor. Rather than leaving the water only as a scenic lake, the project takes use the landscape to filter the water through different stages, and produce clean water for the fields on site and hydroponics growing towers inside the building. The building itself represent the Life Cycle of Food Production: Growing and Harvesting, Drying and Storying, Selling and Cooking through an integrated system of water. The leftover of product is then composted and back to the Growing part of the design. Also as a community centre for the district, the building and the upper part of the water corridor serve as a demonstration site for food production, while the lower part works as the real production corridor of the whole experimental district.
The project also questions the publicness of infrastructure. It evokes the functionality of water and to transform the role of mega-scale engineering structure to a human-scale communal facility for citizens. In Dry Season, the public can visit hydraulic museum through the “Central Ramp”. While in all season, the public can experience the great variety of food produced in the “food library”. They can then experience the life cycle of food through drying area, teaching kitchen, community canteen and market.

After 25 years of local protest against pollution, Kaohsiung oil refinery was finally shut down in November, 2015. This project is an introspection and re-root process of this post-industrial factory. By using the 1.4-kilometers-long soundproof wall between Kaohsiung oil refinery and Houjin as skeleton, corresponding events of official masterplan of the upcoming 30 years, new programs of human scale will implant on the wall and gradually make it root into the ground.

Hong Kong is rapidly and massively developing and with the short supply of residential buildings, vertical development is inevitable. In this vertical spatial structure, there is a clear distinction between floor and floor, unit and unit. The only area that people can connect is the enclosed narrow corridor or lift lobby, which is not a decent lag space for people to chat and engage. The existing residential building is dragging back our social engagement.
The design concept is to replenish the social engagement in this generation and this type of high-rise residential building. For the single bed unit floor, the first step of the approach is to deconstruct an ordinary living unit into relatively public and private programs. Taking the “public” program out and share with the other units, i.e. kitchen, dining area and living room, providing a lot more chance for the residents to communicate and engage.
In terms of two bedroom unit and three bedroom unit, the more public programs (dining room and living room) are placed on the two ends of the unit. Two units are separated only from sliding doors. When both families agree to open their sliding door, the two living rooms or dining rooms will be connected and formed a bigger lag space for gathering.
Overall, the four buildings are connected with 3 activity floors which can extend residents activity area, and hence, encourage more social engagement.

1993 - 2002, Hai'an Road widening project has divided the community into two streets, the disorder and long term urban development, resulting in a serious fracture of the local urban texture. In this case I create a symbiotic space, to sew the gap in between people, and the symbiotic relationship of city.
The existing local community center is a monumental body, which has long been lost as a community intersection platform for residents. In contrast, the entrance between the local roadways, stores outside the arcade, the temple next to the square and other informal semi-outdoor occasions, but residents prone to intersection activities of the place.
Suppose the essence of the building type “community center” is a “community” matter. It should freely adapt both formal and informal community activities. By tracing of local alleys, I try to represent street house-like configuration in my project. The architecture will no longer be managed as a monumental volume, but like a three-dimensional-like alleys, naturally infiltrating into local community behavior.

[It was the best of the times. It was the worst of the times.]
This project examines the possibility in developing self-driven local economies, with cultural diversity and light industry in To Kwa Wan 13 Streets, and improves community life for children and elderly. The position of the project is to provide an alternative way of living and business in against the notorious property hegemony, and to reintegrate a testing ground for nurturing family-sized industries and local craftsmanship.
[Speed, Density, Diversity and Time]
Hong Kong architecture is famous for its speed, density and efficiency. Unfortunately, the irreversible high land rent slowly kills the space diversification and cultural practice. When the monotonous architecture is turning into commodities, it destroyed the priceless family-oriented innovations and experience --- Cultural Time. So, this project aims at regenerating spatial diversity in for co-working, recreational and institutional usages, to against the influence of high land rent.
[A Place to share, not to become a slave for purchasing Space]
In the past, local residents worked in strong community bonding in these 13 streets, operating small scale industries like producing light bulbs and plastic products. At present, the release of building height restriction encourages private developers to redevelop the site with various pencil towers and escalate rental price, making the flats highly unaffordable for grassroots and underprivileged people.
[The Return of Space for the people, by the people]
Can we generate a testing ground for local innovation to diminish social isolation? Facing with this situation, they have nowhere to go but this wonderland, the last place to live freely. Permeable building clusters with residential, creative and light industry can bring back the cultural versatility for grassroots. At the same time, some alley streets are preserved for communal relationship; the alternation achieves new programmatic approach for collective housing towers. It is the last place for working and gathering, in extending their homes to accommodate growing families and businesses.
[It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done.]

In Eudoxia, which spreads both upward and down, with winding alleys, steps, dead ends, hovels, a carpet is preserved in which you can observe the city's true form.
- Invisible City
The city described in Invisible City is similar to the image I got about Keelung City. The harbor is old and used to be prosperous, lying quietly with the City, which is growing and falling. Yet it never changed.
Sandwiched between the mountain and the sea, the harbor experiences the years. The texture of this city is same with it as usual. It is an unrolled carpet. I want to keep this carpet.
As the Invisible City tells, the city itself is the city you wander.

Anti-corruption and dense competition from neighboring countries has triggered crisis of economic downturn in Macau gambling tourism over recent years. Despite the fact that Macau is once known for the exuberant gambling culture, rapid development of disconnected and isolated city islands, created by exaggerated casinos, has severely destroyed Macau’s colonial Portuguese fabric.
Architecture should activate dynamics to the city and stimulate connectivity among various social functions. Architecture should promote social interactions rather than bringing money worship to the society. By reviewing the origin of gambling – gaming, the design aims at constructing a playground of gaming that highlights the joy brought by gaming, inducing critical mind towards gaming and changing the money mad attitude; By connecting the site with the waterfront promenade at Macau peninsula, public space is fostered together with the nearby A-Ma Temple square. It is also a new starting point of the heritage trail, bringing fresh dynamics to the city.
By referencing the flowing circulation of the Macau Baroque church, the design attempts an unconventional approach – three-dimensional, conical geometry to organize 5 programmatic spaces through investigating the pattern density and intersection variation of cones. Citizens are welcomed by a public walkway that passes through the building; People can freely access different activity zones such as exhibition, performance and interactive game zone, finding pleasure through exploring the Chinese traditional gaming culture and understanding the joyous value of gaming. Rough texture of concrete façade recalls people’s memory of the ruins of Macau heritages. The contrast of rough concrete façade and dynamic interior space presents a symbolic meaning of new interpretation of the ancient history of gaming. It serves as a message of becoming a new image of the city.

In my journey to Europe, I saw citizen’s respect for religion. They convey their hopes in eyes, which could never be found on Chinese.
Are we losing our faith? Maybe architecture also got lose.
Therefore, I choose this design. From my perspective, the doctrine of Hinduism attracts me extremely. The Ganges River, which respects all of the creatures, buries thousands of people every day. All human beings are equal, regardless of possession. Such character attracted me, and let me acquire more knowledge of architecture, and the nature.

What cultural product is not escape? Escapism is an inescapable component of human thought and culture. ” ----<Escapism>, Yi-Fu Tuan.
The escape here means leaving from our usual place for a while. Take a trip to somewhere you do not belong.
No one is completely an individual; we all got many roles in life. When time passes by, space between “destinations” is where we put ourselves in. Those open spaces in urban area include these “destinations”, giving us the chance of creating another meaning of usage. When moving from one destination to another, we can see the true world, approaching the space of component of human thought and culture as Yi-Fu Tuan mentioned.
Taipei main station is the biggest station in Taipei. Five types of transportation gathered huge amount of people here and passed by each other. It contains the elements of “between”, but lack of the space.
The case based on the finish of C1 and D1 buildings with Taoyuan International Airport MRT. The complete program of transportation is under ground. This plants a new bridge to break the disconnection on the ground floor.
Urban renewal is a long and hot topic in the straits. In Hong Kong, more dense and complex financial, residential and social facilities are chaotically redeveloped in old districts. Kowloon City, one of the oldest districts, answered the call of urban renewal by randomly erecting high-rise and scattered buildings. Respecting and preserving the existing social facilities, the project reorganizes both pedestrian and traffic circulation in a progressive way by redevelopment the aged buildings in the district. Parks, religious spaces and public spaces are eventually generated in such reorganization, and the project also reuse the old timber piles of the aged building to create a new perspective for the citizens to look back at the history of the district.
History - The building height in the district has long been limited by the old Kai Tak Airport, which was relocated in 1998. Since then the area emerged pencil towers which were doubling / tripling the height of the buildings in the neighborhood. The local business (such as food businesses) persisted and prevailed, while the local culture decayed progressively due to the introduction of the new redevelopments.
Underground pedestrian linkage - Given the new initiatives in the East Kowloon, especially in the Kai Tak Area, and the new infrastructure (new Massive Transport Railway station) coming in place, the connectivity of the area will be greatly enhanced, and the redevelopment will keep accelerating. The proposed renewal project takes the opportunity to interweaves new and the existing infrastructures, districts, people and time, in a way that engages with the interconnection of mobility networks and hubs, the urban landscape and the built environment. Such underground pedestrian linkage is perceived as an integral to the process of local cultural sustainability and regeneration, with the means of restoring and improving the quality of urban life.

The site is Ao-gu wetland. Since colonized by Japan, Taiwanese built the bank for more farms to grow more sugar cane. Once typhoon came, the sea covers the land. Accidentally, it attracts continuous migratory birds. The productive land in the past brought us rich scenery of the nature.
Nowadays, people are skilled at resisting nature, say, by using single type of plant as windbreak in order to hold more land, which resulted lack of biodiversity. We step back and consider how we can get rid of harming the land? I research the system of migrants, plants and tidal. Instead of possessing the land, places people can reach change according to the tidal.
I cross the bridge, land the newborn land which can’t be folded, I dig, I plant, and I memorize my family plant a tree. Though we lost our family, trees as a symbol of eternity become forest and supply more spaces under tree for posterity. We get back to this reclaimed land through the ritual of planting a tree. Whenever we lost our loved ones, the scenery is unique for every family.

Central District was once the CBD of Taichung. In Qing Dynasty, ‘Main Street System’, as the arcade described by Benjamin, is the major way of people ex-changing products. People sold their homemade products along the streets.
In Japanese Colonial period, Japanese Colonial government made each ‘Main Street’ into a square block. It’s called ‘Grid System’. By holding a shop-house and doing business along the blocks, people transferred them-selves into bourgeoisie. In that high density of dividing blocks, Taiwanese arcade provided various city life styles.
However, after WWII, cities in Asia rebuilt themselves in a rapid way because of the requirements of high efficiency and high density. We began to rely on artificial equipment to control lights and air in our buildings. Therefore, the original Taiwanese arcade cultural disappeared.
Nowadays, due to the innovation of formation and communications technology, people can get rid of the capitalism and learn new skills to improve them-selves on internet. Everyone can be a maker.
I try to continue the Taiwanese arcade culture. My design is a cubic and vertical arcade street system. It provides users an open system where they can create their own workshops or studios. Also, this system can make social inter-action and exchanging happens not only on ground floor but also between vertical floors. Furthermore, it makes sure each space have enough natural lights and air.
The site is Chung Ying Entertainment Building, an old multiple functions building within a small block. Inside the building, there is an scooter ramp from ground floor to 3rd floor. Along this ramp, there are several shops. In the cities of Taiwan, inhabitants usually transfer one place to another by using their personal vehicles, scooters. I attend to preserve the old ramp and insert the culture of personal vehicle using habits in Taiwan, creating a vertical Taiwanese arcade.
Lower floors are scooter cinemas, mobile vendors and scooter parking lots.
Middle floors are short term rental workshops, studio and shops.
Upper floors are hostels.
The whole building is supported by 4 main RC cores, including structures, elevators and stairs. Each small volume is composited by light wood or steel structure. In this way, it provides rapid changing ability.

From 80s to now, due to the excessive development of human nature and the impact of climate change, the red beach and wetland area in Panjin area continues to decrease. The contradiction between man and nature is obviously seen. Once warm natural migratory birds’ home is on the verge of extinction, migratory birds will be homeless.
We constructed a "2030 red beach restoration plan", in the red beach through artificial means of the recovery period, the red beach area plans to recover to first century 80s levels in 2030, returning homes, i.e. the red beach, to the migratory birds.
The whole restoration plan is formed from point to line, and the recovery network is composed of the 1.5km which can radiate. This time we have chosen the most obvious part of the conflict, 1, the natural red beach and the artificial paddy field. Set the first point of the recovery plan.
The irony is that the misuse of machinery destroys nature, but humans have to use such a "mechanical device" to restore their natural environment destroyed by modern science and technology.
The recovery device comprises a solar power generation system, a rainwater collection system, a sea water conversion system, a sewage treatment system, a Suaeda salsa culture chamber, and an unmanned air vehicle spray chamber, with some additional features. The piping of the mechanical system was interspersed to form the building. The modular approach allows the free combination of the various system positions, resulting in different forms and spaces. The main function of the device near the red beach is the red beach environment monitoring and cultivation of Suaeda salsa, part of the addition to the ordinary visitors to open the exhibition function. Outdoor stairs and platforms allow visitors not to enter the interior to visit the entire recovery process, and finally to the roof platform for bird watching and overlooking the red beach.

Kowloon City, Hong Kong

My intention would be implanting a food cultural street at the existing back-alley of the Kowloon City District, Hong Kong. My site located at the middle of the City between Nga Tsin Long Road and Nam Kok Road. I see many existing tenement housing in the area. They are around 5-6 floor height. I reserved most of it for the street frontage and widen the inner street area for my food street.
My concept would be the contrast in between the old tenement fabric and the new structure of the building. In residential unit design, half of it will be located in the existing tenement buildings while the rest will be relocated to the new hybrid structure. The new structure is mainly steel and glass to indicate the lightness. I would love to see the connection from the food street in the alley through the new transparent blocks into the traditional residential units.
The reason for using such a contrast in my design is to dictate the ideology of the food culture. In Kowloon City, food restaurants grow into the main element of live. The wide variety of food and rich history background draw tourist to come and reconnect local living. However the existing traffic in the city is overloaded. In my design I am retaining the beauty of the city food culture and re-establish it within my MLP.
In order to present the contrast between old and new, I used modular housing unit which consists of 4 main forms. Each form fulfills different household requirements including the living size, quality and accessibility. The building appearance varies based on the different combination. The break-down façade with mini terrace and extrude deck reflect on one single flowing landscape in the middle. Such a strategy indicates relationship of food culture and urban living.

Located in Kowloon, Hong Kong, 13 streets in To Kwa Wan has the most prosperous car services industry with an active entrepreneurial atmosphere. Before 1979, the industry cluster used to be in Mong Kok. But with the development of MTR, the cluster transferred to the present site. Now, the construction of a new MTR station near the site has posed a threat to the survival of the industry again. Also, without careful planning, the industry has exerted negative influence on living environment of residents in 13 streets. In order to promote a sustainable development of car service industry and community at the same time, this project proposes the relocation of the industry to the northern area. Furthermore, the plan upgrades car services industry that includes the planning of car services center, logistic center, mechanism education, creative industry and etc. and connects the area with four public corridors. At the same time, public corridors are also designed to connect the whole area. Thus, the car services industry could survive and thrive in a socio-sustainable way, residents can also enjoy a harmonious community environment.

As the first initiative opening commercial city in the history of China, Jinan’s Commercial Port District had left a significant impact on social and architecture. However, under the high-speed invasion of modern architecture and expansion of city, it turned to be an isolate island in the modern city where commercial district is losing vitality and space is disordered and unsystematic. Nowadays, architectural protection in the commercial port area is inappropriate, and districts’ texture has been damaged seriously, presenting high-level and high-density to a small extent, and low-level and high-density to a large extent. The different periods and styles of buildings’ types, the complexity of the neighborhood environment, the affluence of history and culture, and the coexistence of life-style constitute a multiple and challenging situation. According to the reasons given-above, we propose an urban renewal strategy ——"symbiotic", which is based on historical buildings and other valuable buildings. We carry out the method of "point cut" to realize a small-scale update in this specific area. By stimulating the city vitality from point to line to surface, we can ultimately achieve a coexistence of old and new, growing mutually.

The site is located in the central district of Taichung, an old district that is now declining. This project aims to integrate the existing urban context and environment, constructing a multi-layered space for urban regeneration.
By strolling about the central district, looking into the incongruity and discontinuity of urban images, we would find that with the crowded streets, current configuration and a mix of Southeast Asian population, the district is not able to be activated by simply adding new functions to it. However, when we look at this district from a microscopic view, we have some findings. On the streets of this district, things that people do for a living and for commercial purposes constitute an image that is full of life or rather, the brief and variable commercial activity of setting up street stalls has continued to be active but loose.
We hereby have a thought that the eternity of architecture should be absolute perfect. But now in the central district, the eternity of architecture lacks a way that connects to contemporary life. It becomes the background of decay and decline. Therefore, we think that “temporary as contemporary”.
After looking into “the street stalls”, we come up with a flexible building system in this project. An inverted free space is vacated by cutting the former dense urban landscape. It serves as a new layer for public housing. This layer provides enough room for customization. The inverted bottom layer can be used as a flexible market. We can do it by building stall units to provide different ethnic groups with transient, flexible and customized space.

The current development in architecture and urbanism was sprouted owing to the pursuit of “Speed” since early 20th century, the adoption of “Density” in view of rapid urban expansion and the promotion of “Diversity” to heal the undesirable segregation caused by over-rational planning. In addition to the three above-mentioned elements in the urban image of the four places nowadays, we advocate to consider “Vernacular” also as a key element in the architectural design, in order that every city can preserve its unique characteristics as soon as undergoing the efficient development in which loss of features is prone to.
Each place has its own “Vernacular”, which is the geological condition as well as the historical context, and therefore has been given with its development. Under the globalization atmosphere in the 21st century, “Vernacular” has become a more crucial factor compared to the past, in the extent of both the architectural design and humanity education. This can allow our city and society to value its own culture, despite the process of rapid development.
Education is essential in the urban and humanity development, and the school life is very important in the growth of every child. Our proposed ecology primary school located at Yuguang Island, Tainan, can be a paradigm to the contemporary education. Not only having the abundant natural resources found on the island, we proposed to integrate space with fish farming ponds and agricultural farms into the public space within the school. Such adoption can encourage the children to learn in exploration and experience in their self-presence in the natural environment, and also cultivate their extinct in observation to their surroundings. The strict separation between a place for ecology learning and the restricted school zone as per traditional schools can therefore be solved. The proposed ecology learning space is suggested to be open to the public during weekends and summer and winter holidays, so as to allow the school children and residents in Tainan city, or even the tourists visiting the place, can join the experimental touching camps here. As a result, the bloom of “Vernacular” of Tainan can be shown at such ecology school.
