DHARMA DRUM INSTITUTE OF LIBERAL ARTS

700 Fagu Rd, Jinshan District, New Taipei City, Taiwan
Kris Yao | Artech

The Dharma Drum Institute is located on a vast wooded hillside. The design stresses harmony with nature and ecological sustainability. Preserving the site’s original terrain was of the utmost importance; thus, the low-profiled buildings stand upon the slopes with minimal excavation and retaining walls, and numerous stairs help to mitigate slopes and harmonize the site with the landscape. The three main buildings—the Academic/Administration Building, the Chan House, and the Sports Complex—were designed to be sensitive and responsive to the environment. Platforms, corridors, and bridges link the spaces, providing ease of access, expanding activity areas, and highlighting the dramatic qualities of the spatial sequence. The overall style is imbued with a sense of maturity, so the finished buildings will blend in well with the surroundings and retain their characters for many decades to come.

REDEVELOPMENT OF KING GEORGE V SCHOOL - PERFORMING ARTS BLOCK (PA BLOCK)

2 Tin Kwong Road, Ho Man Tin, Hong Kong
Ronald Lu & Partners

Performing Arts Block (PA Block) is a new building in the heart of one of the oldest schools in Hong Kong – King George V School. The PA Block connects the process of learning and living with the beauty of nature. The design ingeniously turned the constraint of an existing 18m-high Banyan tree behind the school’s old canteen into a place-making theme for the new block. The architectural spaces and form of the new block evolved around and embraced this mighty tree. An amphitheatre and surrounding outdoor learning and social spaces were carefully designed around the tree encouraging student gatherings, discussions and performances. It also blends indoor and outdoor environments into one common space.

Horizontal sun-shading devices were incorporated in the building’s façade to minimise the impact of the southern sun on internal areas. Typical floors employ a simple rectilinear form with shallow depth to promote cross-ventilation, while the building’s layout with its service core at the western end alleviates the effect of solar heat gain on functional rooms. The headroom of each typical floor was also maximised to provide natural daylight and ventilation for the interior spaces.

ZHEJIANG CAMPUS LIBRARY, TONGJI UNIVERSITY

No. 168,Taining Road,Zhejiang Campus, Tongji University, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province
Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd.

The construction land of this engineering project is located in the axial road of the planned campus. Such are the external contexts that we firmly believe that library's volume should be defined as a complete cube, just like a square seal falls on the center of campus. This is like a " monolithic " rock solidly embedded in round yet slightly elevated grounds, with only the main entrance of the west side and the green slope covering the logistics entrance and small lecture hall to the east that stretch out from the monolith.

The cube volume of the library is composed of two relatively independent buildings on the north and south sides and the semi-outdoor open atrium between them. The bottom of the atrium from the basement to the third floor are organized along a big landscaped platform that follows a series of green sloping terrain consisting of reciprocating lifting platform of the landscape. This platform stretches along the major public spaces together.

GRASSY PEAK(TSAOLING) ECO-GEOLOGICAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REBUILT

No. 56-8, Caoling, Gukeng Township, Yunlin County 646, Taiwan
Kuo J.P. Architect & Associates

Grassy Peak (Tsao Ling) Elementary School is a remote school that was moved and rebuilt as a result of typhoons and mudslides disasters. In the past, the village was a famous tourist town well known for it's beautiful scenery. However, after the 921 earthquakes, the previous glory of the town faded.

In the renovation process of the school, we have incorporated flexible building material well suited for the topography of the area. The building has also been re-designed to function as a community cultural center as well as meeting the needs of both teachers and students.

Steel and wood were used to make the school lighter, more durable, and enrich its architectural design. It features historical material, which is often seen in Taiwan. Retaining sloping roofs and indoor aisles to integrate seamlessly with the topography of the environment, this newly re-designed space can now satisfy not only the school but also the community.  We hope that this new center piece of the community will serve as a fine contribution to the collective tourism industry of the local area.

KAI TAK PO LEUNG KUK STANLEY HO SAU NAN PRIMARY SCHOOL

11 Muk Hung Street, Kowloon, Hong Kong
Architectural Services Department, HKSAR Government

A school is a community: a micro-society, a mini-city within a city. It is an oasis yet has a direct relationship with the city at large. The concept is to bring students and teachers together through different spaces, to encourage interactions. Breaking away from typical densely-built 8-storey school buildings with ground-level ball-courts in Hong Kong, this school adopts a low-rise 4-storey design, with raised central ball-court on the first floor, pulling together spaces and activities.

From the entrance plaza, a staircase route leads to the covered-playground, ball-court and library roof-garden, creating a sense of discovery of places, stimulating self-discovery. This staircase path connects the three major open spaces of the school, setting the orientation of the campus.

In similar way traditional walled-villages of Hong Kong were strategically laid out within their village walls; inside the campus wall, the school hall which resembles the village hall, library and classroom blocks are arranged around the ball-court, with link-bridges, courtyards and colonnade, shaping the school as a micro-polis, conceived as a whole using major urban design elements of a city.

Greening, fair-faced concrete, metal and timber screens compose a variety of spatial experiences to be discovered; while creating an oasis in the city.

PUJIANG CHINA WELFARE INSTITUTE KINDERGARTEN, PUJIANG NEW TOWN, MINHENG, SHANGHAI

Pujiang New Town, Minhang District, Shanghai
Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd.

The design of the Pujiang China Welfare Institute Kindergarten emphasizes the integration of the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating multi-type outdoor space for children. It advocates the children’s independent growth, regarding the public space as a spatial carrier for early children’s independent activities. And it attaches great importance to the safety and convenience in daily management.

The main volume of this building is designed close to the north and the east, leaving a large area in the south and west as outdoor activity ground. The whole project has two parallel strip-type teaching buildings slightly staggered at the north part of the site and one spot-type building for preschool teacher training center at the south-east, all connected by a pedestal which contains all the public activity facilities and administrative offices.

ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH LIFE CENTRE

138 Nathan Road, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong
Nelson Chen Architects Ltd.

On this heritage-listed site, there were no obvious solutions:  historic buildings are protected by the Antiquities and Monuments Office, while the narrow existing driveway to the elevated site restricts emergency vehicle access beyond the street frontage. Besides, any new structure could well be viewed as disrupting the heritage outlook of the entire compound.

Thus, this major extension to St. Andrew’s Church was proposed as a largely underground building, below an existing front courtyard to be restored with replanted trees and landscaping on a new roof garden. The new structure of 2,875 sq.m. comprises an 850-seat auditorium with baptismal pool, vestry and entrance on Nathan Road. The subterranean space is skylighted above the altar/stage as well as along the semi-circular perimeter walls to allow natural light to penetrate throughout.

The lower level is devoted to youth and children’s ministry, with classrooms and meeting rooms arranged around a central, stepped conversation pit, which doubles as a smaller worship and performing space for youth fellowship. The new extension is connected to the historic church building by stairways to the roof garden as well as a lift for disabled access.

A major benefit of this underground building is the ability to introduce a contemporary addition that is still visually compatible with its heritage site, by preserving and enhancing the original buildings and grounds. Existing retaining wall stones were restored and reused at the new entrance facade to extend its heritage presence on Nathan Road. In addition, the thermal mass of the landscaped green roof lowers overall energy consumption.

This design received two Honor Awards in Architecture from the AIA Hong Kong Chapter in 2015 and the AIA International Region in 2016.
