Over the past decade, growth rate in Asia Pacific region was the highest among the world. Amidst the high living standards and rise in poverty, development of the city is increasingly influenced by resources constraints. High level of urbanization and industrialization involves exploitation of natural wealth, which has become global issue as it starts to threaten the stability and prosperity of the region. Due to such concerns and risks, the concept of creating harmony and balance between economic development and environmental sustainability has emerged.

Besides factors such as growth of population and increase in consumption, decline in natural capital can also cause by poor natural resources management decision. Design and construction process are the crucial elements for green building. Architects, designers and urban planners determine the overall success of the project as they evaluate the surrounding factors to minimize the urban sprawls and needless destruction of valuable land, habitat and green space that are vital to sustainable living. This year at ACA17, we will be gathering experts and professionals from the architectural industry, to further discuss potential methods that could help to incorporate green elements and green technology in the project design and construction process progresses.

ABOUT HKIA

On 3 September1956, 27 architects gathered and formed “The Hong Kong Society of Architects”. After that, the membership number grew constantly and recognition as an Allied Society was given by Royal Institute of British Architects. The Institute officially changed its name to “The Hong Kong Institute of Architects” in 1972. The main purposes of the Institute are to continue to raise both the standard of architecture in Hong Kong and the standard of professional services offered by its members. On 12 January 1990, the Institute was incorporated as a statutory body.

Today, The Hong Kong Institute of Architects has around 4,200 members, including 183 Fellows, over 3,000 Members and more than 800 Associates and Graduate Members. In addition to the responsibilities of architects as professionals under law, members of the Institute are governed by a Code of Professional Conduct. This Code aims to provide the standard of professional conduct and self-discipline required of the members of the Institute in the interest of the general public. The Institute also serves the public by applying the collective expertise of its members in an advisory role to government and to the building industry.
