REVEAL 2: +-x÷ For the City. For the Community.

Architecture and Community have always been fundamentally linked as the built environment and its people are forever in a reciprocal-influencing relationship; and because of this, architecture will always remain a powerful instrument for inducing social change and affecting quality of life. As we approach the 60th anniversary of HKIA in 2016, we take the opportunity to revisit this essential linkage and through the REVEAL 2 exhibition, we hope to demonstrate the possibilities in which our skills and abilities as Architects can contribute to our social fabric and shape a positive and vibrant community.

While Architecture is typically only perceived in the forms of ‘buildings’, it is in reality much more. It is a lifestyle with a long-term commitment to the built-environment, whereby ‘buildings’ is only one of many mediums used to achieve a better way of living.

Themed, “For the City. For the Community.” the REVEAL 2 exhibition at Artistree is an open creative platform where Architects are encouraged to explore and define their social intentions, and through processes of “+ − × ÷”, demonstrate a range of creative and unconventional works that propose unique insights to new interpretations of the city, alternative forms of living; and creative ideas that value chosen concerns such as justice, equality, participation, sharing and sustainability.

The 4 identified solving methods “+ − × ÷” are intended simply as instigators and they are merely the beginnings for further discourses to arise. We hope that through the communication of our ideas, creativity and inspiration can be cultivated, and innovative solutions can be achieved with the collective efforts of the community. Ultimately, the call for change is everywhere, and even the smallest solving steps are indispensable seeds of larger transformations.

The REVEAL 2 exhibition is divided into four zones – Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. Using these basic operations as catalysts, the exhibits in each zone take on a different perspective of interpretation of our city.

“+” Addition - the act of adding or uniting, a reaction in which two or more substances are combined to form another compound, an aggregation of different people, events and memories. The exhibits look for synergies of collectiveness though the evoking of memories and objects. The exhibits also explore the idea of adding value through exercises of up-cycling.

“-” Subtraction - the act of taking away, to take the shackles off or to less the burden of, to reduce and to simplify. The exhibits explore negative spaces and voids. They target issues of the forgotten, the neglected, and the under-represented. The works also explore ideas of reduction and rationalization.

“x” Multiplication - to increase in manifold, the act of collaboration and cross-overs. The exhibits showcase works of collaborations to represent a collective whole.

“÷” Division - to divide and to share, to embrace diversification and differences. The exhibits showcase works of sharing through co-living and shared spaces. It is a celebration of the coming together of opposing ideas and differences.

“[ ]” Capturing - to capture, picturize or romanticize juncture of the city and community. The exhibits reveal architects' minds and hearts by means of photographs, drawings and collages.
