The HKIA Journal Issue 79 “Community” is launching soon. In Hong Kong, architects are increasingly more sensitive to designing with and for communities. There is growing experience and expertise in different project types that place community-building at its core. Recent practice has also broadened to include placemaking, design thinking and co-creation, having moved on from the previous era’s participatory design and planning to become more impactful both in design and social relations. At their best, user-inspired designs can enable “self-seeded” appropriations, empowering individuals to take collective ownership of their surroundings and cultivate a sense of community cohesion.

We take this opportunity to thank the editorial team, writers and participants of the Symposium on Community for their visions, insightful analysis and diligence in working on this Journal, with Mr. Thomas Chung as the Chief Editor, Ms. Miriam Lee as the Executive Editor, Mr. Ian Tan as the Assistant Editor and Mr. Weijen Wang as the Journal Director.
