UIA Architecture and Children Golden Cubes Awards 2013/14 - Call for Submissions



The UIA Architecture & Children Work Programme has launched the second edition of UIA Golden Cubes Awards (“the Awards”). As a Member Section of UIA, The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) will organize the first phase selection process for the Awards in Hong Kong. Deadline for submissions for the National Selection Process of the Awards is 5pm on 15 February 2014.

Hong Kong Green School Guide

The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) Public Education Committee has recently engaged educational stakeholders and identified that there is a need for a centralised information resource that provides guidance to schools on carrying out energy and environmental improvement projects on school buildings and facilities.

The overarching aim of the Guide is to inform stakeholders of the constraints, opportunities and benefits arising from energy and environmental improvements to their school building and facilities, and how the potential opportunities and benefits can best be realized.

Community Walk and 3D Streetscape Model Making



In collaboration with the Heep Hong Society, HKIA organized two consecutive events for children with developmental disorders. In the first session, architect volunteers had a community walk with the children to show them distinctive architecture in their community. In the second session, the architect volunteers and children use the photos they had taken during their walk to make 3D streetscape models.

UIA Work Programme “Architecture and Children” – Built Environment Education

The Hong Kong Institute of Architects has joined the UIA Built Environment Education network, which aims to help Architects and Teachers everywhere to show young people what makes good Architecture a Sustainable environment. So that, as adult citizens, users, clients and decision-makers they may take an active part in shaping the world they live in, embracing both heritage and innovation in the creation of communities which provide a healthy and harmonious quality of life.

Production of Teaching kit for appreciation of architecture in Secondary School Curriculum’



Ongoing - 2013
HKIA is working on a 20-month project funded by the government of HKSAR to develop a teaching kit on Hong Kong architecture for secondary school curriculum and follow-up with a series of introduction and training activities for the teachers.



Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture Children Workshop – We All Live in the Forbidden City



The workshop is a fun-filled platform for young people aged between 9-12 to understand Chinese arts and culture through “roaming” the Forbidden City and “knowing” the characters in the world’s largest palace. The workshop uses well-designed props, worksheets and games to create an interactive learning experience.

Collaboration with Heep Hong Society



The Community Development Committee under Board of External Affairs of HKIA has been collaborating with Heep Hong Society on a Garden project in their new centers such as Yu Ming Centre in Tseung Kwan O. A workshop at Yu Ming Centre and visit to those featured architectures in Tseung Kwan O with around 15 kids were held on 11 February 2012 and 10 March 2012 respectively. 10 volunteers from HKIA members have participated at the events.

Green School Improvement Guide in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) has commissioned Business Environment Council Limited (BEC) to undertake a study to put forward suggestions and recommendations that can help develop a Green School Improvement Guide for primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong.

Youth Construction Development Challenge (YCDC) Competition


September 2011 – May 2012
Organized by Vocational Training Council and Construction Industry Council and co-organized by HKIA, the YCDC Competition is being organized for secondary school students to submit a proposal for construction project in order to improve their own school and turn it into a “Dream School”.

Sharing Session with youngster on Ngau Tau Kok Estate



13 August 2011
In collaboration with Caritas Community Centre, Community Development Committee introduced “architect” and “architecture”, shared their living experience in living in Ngau Tau Kok Estate and community space and performed a workshop with the youngsters.



IDEA Project - Participate, Design and Build a Better School in Cambodia, Exhibition 2011

Love of the Earth 2010: Build Your Dream



April 2010
Voluntary members from HKIA participated at the education camp organized by the Shatin Junior Chamber to provide training to children ages 12-15 on topics of urban planning and green architecture. The objective Is to provide more training to these young children on the importance of environmental projection and how their daily life can affect the environment.
