HONG KONG EAST COMMUNITY GREEN STATION

30 Oi Shun Road, Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong
Architectural Services Department, HKSAR Government

How can we create a recycling station in our neighbourhood that would have a positive impact on the community? We don’t want to build just a rubbish collection point, but a positive addition to the local area. At the heart of urban residential area, we create a green oasis to embody a sense of community through using green wall, bamboo trellis and courtyard garden. We injected this left-over temporary carpark underneath the major flyover in Sai Wan Ho with vibrancy and turn into a public urban forum.

The concept is to create a street through the site to connect the surrounding communities. Greenies of the nearby Park are extended to the old district through this urban intercourse. The Station is divided into separate blocks along our Street that hold exhibitions and educational programmes, and recycling facilities that allows recyclable collections at the other end.

The Street together with the garden embodies variety of gathering places, creates multiple layer of space from public to private, from open space, semi-open space to enclosed area, as an interpretation of pavilions in Chinese Garden. Although the building is temporary, it embodies permanent cultural value, rediscovers our roots and finds parallel with prevailing green features.

ATTEMPSPACE – UNLEASHING POTENTIAL OF TEMPORARY VACANT SPACES IN CITY

25-29 Kok Cheung Street, Square Mile Area, Tai Kok Tsui, Hong Kong
arQstudio Ltd

Hong Kong is renowned for its quality high density living with minimal urban footprint. Beyond clever planning of space in three dimensional sense, aTTempspace (attempts at temporary spaces) explores potential of the time dimension of spaces by creative design and curation, and by use of information technology and social media.

In cities, many temporary vacant spaces are not well utilized, such as offices and its lobbies during weekend, atrium of shopping malls between events, spaces waiting to be let or sold, or buildings waiting to be re-developed.

aTTempspace put ideas into action and turned a vacant space of a to-be-demolished industrial building into venues for many events in a few months, such as maker x craft fair, concerts, recycle book fair, art exhibitions and even an indoor drone race and a giant mahjong game.

This project, as a pilot showcase in using these vacant spaces, has solved problems in turning a bare shell without electricity, air-conditioning or furniture into inspiring settings for various uses with borrowed, rented or reusable installations, and curate interesting contents for its neighbourhood in an extremely short program and minimal budget. This turns a dead empty spot of city into a lively cultural attraction.

GREEN FACTORY

Huashan1914˙Creative Park, No.1, Sec. 1, Bade Rd., Zhongzheng Dist., Taipei City 100, Taiwan
Architerior Architects & Associates

The design of Green Factory is a prophecy of an infusion of future urban life and green landscape.  It is served as a civic garden for communities to grow vegetables.  It is also a green base to inspire more city residents to become urban farmers.  Factory was originally seen as a place for labor and production.  Here in Green Factory, the productions are not only vegetables, but also people’s free will and action for the engagement of green life.

Along the spatial sequence of a linear extension, transformation, and unveiling, Green Factory outlines various-sized spaces while drawing on the relation between the surrounding urban space and courtyard.  A sense of mobile rhythm is created within an interesting, public, and multi-functional space.  The design converts the form of traditional garden into a multi-level public courtyard - a field of green life that incorporates physical exercise, knowledge and experience sharing, and social networks interaction.  An alternative type of cityscape is constructed in which people can relax and enjoy a greener living.

The pavilion is the direct presentation of its construction.  Its structural plate elements consist of standard building materials commonly used in Taiwan only for concrete mold process.  They are now converted into materials for the construction itself. The composition of the plates creates a porous interface for interior and exterior interaction. Through the interaction between the layers and the lighting environment, the rough feel of the original material is merged with the elegant poetic space.

HEADQUARTERS OF THE HONG KONG FEDERATION OF WOMEN @ LOCKHART ROAD, WANCHAI

No. 435, Lockhart Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong
BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors Ltd.

In a high density city like Hong Kong, acquiring space for different purposes often means a high cost. This probably especially presents greater difficulty to NGOs and charitable groups operating on subsidies or donations.

Leftover spaces under flyovers are one of the viable options for extra spaces. Often deemed inhospitable, the Canal Road flyover in Wanchai and Causeway Bay is one exception that carves out architectural spaces for different purposes, one of them being the Headquarters of the Hong Kong Federation of Women.

The new Hong Kong Federation of Women T.S. Kwok Service Centre spans approximately 80m occupying 9,500sq.ft. across one single floor. The new architecture under the bridge harbours a variety of facilities. Apart from administrative areas, multi-function room, lecture hall, display gallery are some new additions to the Headquarter, functions that open up possibilities for the Federation to organize and host more activities for its members and organizations.

To realize the design objectives for the Centre, dedicated features are incorporated into the architecture to improve or overcome the negative environmental aspects presented by site conditions, namely the undesirable air quality, lighting and ventilation of the building.

QIANHAI SHENZHEN-HONG KONG YOUTH INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEUR HUB

Qian Hai, Shenzhen
BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors Ltd.

SKYNET FOR LOGO SQUARE AND COURTYARD CAFÉ @ HONG KONG POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Hong Kong
BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors Ltd.

Significance of the Siting
Located at the Heart of the PolyU campus, the Logo Square performs as the central point of numerous campus activities for both students and teaching staff.

Synopsis
The design philosophy core to the whole PolyU campus has been quite consistently of red brick modules. While ZHA’s Innovation Tower “blends in” with the existing campus “by contrast” with its fluid form, our Skynet, closest at 50m from the Tower, deliberately takes an orthogonal and angular form in a variety of sizes to contrast with their provocative blend-in strategy.

Skynet takes on 2 metaphors. The form of the Skynet takes the metaphor of an organic tree, with the structural supports branching out to support the glass canopy in an organic geometric order. Also because of this environmental suggestion, the glass canopy is conceived as the sky. Glass of different hues of blue is used, creating a Skynet that is almost invisible.

TRANSFORMATION OF A CARPARK INTO HK FEDERATION OF YOUTH GROUPS JOCKEY CLUB M21 @ SHEK PAI WAN ESTATE

Shek Pai Wan Shopping Centre, 68 Yue Kwong Rd, Aberdeen, Hong Kong
BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors Ltd.

An Adaptive Re-use Architectural Design to provide a new life to an existing architecture by reintroducing new functions and new elements to transform a "Re-birth" to the architecture in a Hyper-Density City.

In a Hyper Density City like Hong Kong, there are insufficient lands for new build. Therefore the strategy of Re-Cycling the existing abandoned architecture by Re-introducing new functions and elements to Re-Create the Adaptive Re-Use is a MUST.

Adaptive Re-Use in Architecture is a vague, premature topic in Hyper-Density City like Hong Kong, but is a kind of Sustainability and Adaptability in City Planning, thus is a hot topic of future vision of Architectural Development in populated Asian countries.

The entire Adaptive Re-use and it's alterations in Structure, Electrical & Mechanical, Architectural Dimensions and Ergonomics, New Functions & Circulation, as well as Interior Detailing & Lighting Designs are specifically designed for Functionality & Practicality in Human Body.

WANCHAI SPORTS FEDERATION @ MORETON TERRACE, CAUSEWAY BAY

Government Land under the flyover at Moreton Terrace, Causeway Bay
BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors Ltd.

In a high density city like Hong Kong, acquiring space for a Non-Government Funded Organisation often means a high cost. This probably especially presents greater difficulty to NGOs and charitable groups operating on subsidies or donations.

Adaptive Reuse of Leftover Space
Leftover spaces under flyovers are one of the viable options for extra spaces. Often deemed inhospitable, the Moreton Terrace flyover in Causeway Bay is one exception that carves out architectural spaces for different purposes, one of them being the Headquarters of the Wanchai Sports Centre

Following the great success of the Utilization of Leftover Space underneath Flyover for the Headquarter of Hong Kong Federation of Women, the Wan Chai Sports Federation is another attempt to fully explore the space beneath the Flyover in Moreton Terrace, Causeway Bay, with a hope to demonstrate the full potential of leftover space in a Hyper-Density City like Hong Kong.

The Federation occupies 2450 sq. ft under the major Flyover in Moreton Terrace next to Central Library connecting Tai Hang and Northern Causeway Bay. The Split-Levels suggest an even higher efficiency within a tight site. The Rectangular Architectural Form purposely surrounded by a Fenced Garden for gatherings whilst the Federation allows a Sports’ Hall with Upper Gallery at 870 sq. ft, and a Multi-function Hall, Ancillary Back-up Offices, Changing Rooms and Resources Centre.

In order to Re-Create an iconic architecture below a Flyover, the underneath of the Flyover will be lighted up whilst the architecture is coloured by Contrasting “Orange” and “Dark Grey”.

WHOLESALE CONVERSION OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDING INTO VERTICAL ARTIST VILLAGE - GENESIS @ WONG CHUK HANG

Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong
BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors Ltd.

Under the initiatives of Hong Kong Development Bureau to facilitate wholesale conversion of industrial buildings, the project aims to revitalize abandoned industrial building into a contemporary vertical artist village at Hong Kong Island South. Consisting of 22 floors, the project marks a new chapter of adaptive re-use in architecture in Hong Kong.
With the support from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the 12th Floor of the GENESIS is dedicated to offer low rent studios to artists and designers to promote local art and culture development.
The Skin Architecture
While one of the client’s expectations is to include elements of “Italian” and “Ferrari” into the building, the unique Ferrari yellow of the skin architecture and the twists on the elevation are reminiscent of the outstanding speed of the Italian sports car Ferrari. The identical Ferrari yellow also makes the newly furnished architecture prominent and adds vitality to the surrounding area.

The Vertical Twist
The introduction of the Vertical Twisted Architectural Fins is an attempt to 'Dismantle" and to "Disorder" the monotonous elevation treatment of the original skin, whilst the Twists are the orthodox response to the Ascending Flyover right in the front of the site. The Vertical Twisted Architectural Fins also perform as the Vertical Lighting Devices for the architecture.

Such 'Verticality" reveals the Vertical Forces of the Ancient Gothic Church, but in a much more Contemporary Manipulations.

The Display Window in the Air
The Superimposition created by the "Set-Back" of introducing Balconies and Double Volume Display Windows are injected on the External Skins, the Balconies' Zones are recreated to serve the New Functions, whilst the manifestation of the "Double Volume Display Windows" are purposely set at an angle to coincide the gradient of the ascending flyover right in the front, recreating a new metaphor of "Window-Shopping in the Air" for the drivers and passengers.

All these Display Windows in the Air will be showcasing the Artworks of the Artists in the air.

The GENESIS is to become a hub for young designers and artists, which follows plenty of worldwide precedents in bringing exciting cultural and commercial life to abandoned buildings formerly derelict, abandoned or simply underutilized. The project presents an architectural manifestation of design innovation, flexibility and adaptability.
